I suspect the software you were playing with tried to format the card in which case the data is lost unless you have access to a data recovery program and you are sufficiently lucky that it works.

The problem is just as likely to be with the ExpressCard port on my 17' MacBook Pro as with any of the accessories - I think that usb 3 night be pushing it a bit too hard. I could not for the life of me get my macbook to recognize it. i returned it to the store and bought a sandisk imagemate card reader - works perfectly. the prolem turned out to be the card reader wouldn't read the newer, faster cards.

I then spent ages trying to update drivers, checking cables etc, and then tried an older, slower card - it worked without problem. when i put in a 16gb udma cf card, it wouldn't even see it. i bought a new usb3.0 card reader, which the computer (pc) recognised without problem.
